Product Description

This is the story of an adventurer, Michael Callender, who is of Scots/Irish descent and who lived for 40 years in the Republic of South Africa. His title is an apt description of an extraordinary land that is made up of a brilliant scenery, charismatic peoples, and an inheritance of savagery. The leopard is a creation of beauty, razor wire a symbol of harshness. In the author's belief, this summarises South Africa --‐ a country of raw contradiction.

Michael Callender presents a collection of rousing stories as a British immigrant who witnessed a wildly oscillating pendulum from the peak of Apartheid in the late 1960s to the 'New South Africa' as termed today. His portrayal of the 'Wild South', as he describes this domain, is presented in a manner that is in harmony with the author's independent spirit that found deep inspiration in a challenging and exciting land. The descriptions of the warriors, the adventurers, sportsmen, and the mavericks that he encountered, set against the kaleidoscopic panorama of a country that remains a frontiersland, is an essential read for those that are either linked to the country or have aspirations to learn more about this controversial and emotive land.

Michael Callender currently spends his time between his home in Provence and Africa. He is married to Vivienne and has a son and daughter (deceased).

His first book "Roaming with a rifle" was published in America.

“The soldiers, frontiersmen, explorers, hunters, and traders that abounded in South Africa in its formative years and who forged the foundations of this country of ours are given true recognition in this fascinating story. A ‘must’ read for those who possess an adventurous spirit.”
Colonel Jannie Breytenbach DVR, SD, SM CO SA 44 Para Brigade

“I was enthralled with this adventure which is reminiscent of ‘Jock of the Bushveldt’ and Michael Callender certainly stirs the blood in his fast paced book.”
Simon Murray CBE – businessman, adventurer, author and former French Foreign Legionnaire

“Reading this narrative and having experienced South Africa for myself, this is true excitement and a pulsating, red blooded account of a life that is refreshing in its stark contrast to the dreary, over cosseted world of today. We who aspire to adventure are fortunate people to comprehend what the real meaning of living is about.”
Sir Clay Blyth CBE, BEM - Scottish yachtsman and rower

“I first encountered Michael Callender in 1974 when leading the British Lions against the Springboks – I doubt South Africa has forgiven this team of mine! Understanding both the vibrant spirit of this special land and that of the multi-faceted author, this is a glorious portrayal of a big hearted country. He writes it well and vividly.”
Willie John McBride MBE – Former ruby union player
